The funny thing is that while blocking Trump for the ballot would be awful for the GOP in '24, it’d be good for the GOP in subsequent elections; the meltdown would happen and they’d be able to move past it and rebuild as a (more or less) normal political party again.
Right? Republicans at all levels from your crazy neighbor to the pastor of the local evangelical church all the way up to the RNC and beyond have proven beyond doubt that laws, customs, the constitution of the US mean nothing to them at all.

They’ve definitely poisoned the well for me. I used to vote for the occasional conservative, but aligning themselves with trump and his rhetoric is beyond the pale. I’m voting straight blue for the foreseeable future regardless of them trying to walk back the damage they’ve done.
I’m actually thinking it would be good for them in 24. Haley polls well against Biden. Plus they get to say they’d be the ones electing a person of color and the first woman president. Obviously its the left that are the true racists/anti-women people.

I think you underestimate the clarity of purpose brought about by a cocktail of spite and desperation to avoid prison. Besides, he’s got people to really beat the write-in drum for him if it were to come down to that.
But also, Trump is absolutely a grassroots campaign kind of person, I’d argue. His rallies and email blasts are some of the best targeted political ads there are. They’re often serving stupid ends, but he is phenomenal at getting his dumb message out there.
He’s a vengeance kind of guy. Vengeance is one of the major factors in his personality. He would absolutely put in the work to screw over someone else.

For years, I kept assuming that would happen - that the party would move on and return to some sense of normalcy. I’m not fully convinced anymore that it will happen; the GOP rank-and-file’s embrace of conspiracy theories, anti-intellectualism, and elevation of “own the libs” over any real policies has taken on a life of its own. I would not be surprised if this… mentality (?) continues to dominate the party for a decade or more past Trump’s irrelevance, whenever that finally happens.
