Viola Davis: Donald Trump doesn’t know anything about acting

The actor, who starred in Fences, said “Anyone who labels Meryl Streep ‘overrated’ doesn’t know anything about acting.”

This is in reference to Streep’s public spat with President Trump.

After she used her platform at the Golden Globes to deliver an impassioned speech about Donald Trump, the President fired off an angry tweet calling her “overrated”.

Davis also seemed sceptical about #OscarsSoWhite; although the Bafta awards had many diverse nominees, she was worried it could be an anomaly.

he said: “I believe what still is a deficiency is that we have one year a plethora of American-American movies and then the next year nothing.”

Davis explained predictions for next year have been floated already “and very few African-American names are in there”.

Because of the political climate, she also spoke of the worries she has for her five year old daughter Genesis. 

She said: “She has to understand that she’s gotta be the change she wants to be.

“She can’t assume people’s minds have been woken up – we see that in the political climate now. We have to be the instrument of change now.”

avis also praised the late playwright August Wilson, who penned Fences.

She said his plays highlighted that “our lives mattered as African-Americans. The horse groomer, the janitor, the people who grew up under the heavy boot of [Southern anti-black laws] Jim Crow.

“The people who did not make it into the history book but they have a story, and those stories deserve to be told because they lived.”
